Another fishing lesson is here (btw, I’m terrible at actual fishing), I want to share with you my favorite places to find and evaluate IP for licensing.
1/ ExploreIP
ExploreIP is a fantastic resource that aggregates IP across all of Canada’s universities. While it’s not always up to date, it’s quite good overall and has some real gems if you know how to navigate it. One of the challenges is that it can be tricky to navigate due to its broad scope, but once you get the hang of it, you can uncover some excellent IP opportunities. The key is persistence and leveraging the platform’s search functions to dig deep into the available technologies.
2/ TechLink
TechLink in the US is another excellent resource, especially if you’re looking for a streamlined licensing process. Their search function might be a bit weak, but their express licensing model is fantastic and something that should be emulated by other institutions. This model makes the licensing process much more straightforward and less bureaucratic, which can be a significant advantage when you’re trying to move quickly and efficiently.
3/ University IP Licensing Websites
The IP licensing websites of individual universities can vary a lot, so you need to be careful and strategic. Some universities have a stellar reputation for their IP portfolios and technology transfer offices. Focusing on these institutions can yield great results. The key is to target universities with a solid reputation for innovation and effective IP management. While the process might be more fragmented than using a centralized platform, the potential for finding high-quality IP is significant.
I hope you enjoyed this quick glance into some of the places I regularly use to find IP. Let me know in the comments below if you’d like me to do a deep dive into any of these resources. Stay tuned for more insights and tips on navigating the world of intellectual property!
